Welcome 5th Grade Learners and Families! 


I hope you had a pleasant first week of school. My name is Mx. Shreck. I am from Brazil but spent most of my youth in Iowa. I was a teacher there for many years! I was a middle school teacher in Pilsen,too. I am your child’s Language Arts and Social Studies teacher. This year, we will develop skills in reading and writing. Many of our projects will be worked on at school. I do encourage your child to read for 20 minutes everyday outside of school, at the beginning of the year, longer is good too! Listen to your child read to you, ask questions to help them understand what they read. Read in English and for those of you who have the potential to read in another language, practice reading in the home language, too! Reading helps your child learn new vocabulary words! I will be using Class Dojo and I also use google voice to connect with parents and share documents about upcoming events, in case the paper versions don’t make it home. Classroom expectations: 

  • Rest and eat a variety of brain growing foods.
  • Come to school everyday!
  • Body awareness: be calm and aware of your body. 
  • Be an active listener and participant: make eye contact with speakers.
  • Be focused: listen attentively and have a calm body. Avoid distractions and use your voice! 
  • Come prepared: pencils, erasers and coloring materials
  • Be an active participant. Work when work is due. Be responsible for your learning and assignments.
  • Practice good manners (Yes, No, please, thank you, excuse me, may I, apologize…etc) 
  • Ask for help! 
  • Be safe. Be kind. Be yourself. 
  • Strive to do your best everyday! 

1st Quarter Learning: 

  • Unit 1: How do people work together to build a strong community? 
    • Skills: Word Study suffix blends and spelling 
    • Reading Literature: Sarai Saves the Music and Ghost 
    • Writing: Character analysis and summary
